KUIU’s quest for the finest ingredients led us to Nuyarn by the Merino Company in New Zealand, where they take their wool remarkably seriously. Nuyarn is not a new fabric, it’s a new way of making fabric. Traditional ring spun yarn twists the life out of yarn. Nuyarn doesn’t.

Classic yarns twist fibers together for strength, which leaves ends poking out. Nuyarn takes the twist out, and instead lays fibers along the same orientation as the rest of the yarn, so fabrics feel less prickly and more comfortable yet become stronger. The unique yarn orientation creates more loft while significantly reducing weight. Nuyarn lower-density fabrics let lighter-weight garments outperform heavier traditional ring spun garments.

KUIU’s ULTRA Merino 145 lightweight collection is an incredibly comfortable blend of wool and nylon providing a next to skin or layered option for the highly active hunter. Naturally odor-reducing, moisture wicking and thermo regulating, the 145 is an ideal choice for hunters needing a long term effective solution in a wide range of aerobic conditions and temperatures.
We recommend only Superfine Merino for next to skin. Superfine Merino 15 –18.5 micron has no itch, is very soft and comfortable. Microns are the unit of measurement used to express a wool fibers diameter. The lower the micron of a fiber the finer it is. The finer the wool, the softer it is next to skin.

Through extensive research we found that 17.5 micron is the best balance of next to skin comfort and durability. Unlike coarser micron wools, Superfine Merino fibers bend with pressure against the skin, flexing so as not to agitate the nerves, which creates the itchy feeling people often experience with wool products.

Nuyarn uses a Wool Nylon blend to increase loft, stretch, dry times, warmth and strength.
Our lightest base layer for warmest-weather hunts on its own, or the next-to-skin layer on colder hunts.
The breathability, or the ability to dissipate perspiration, of Merino fabrics brings about temperature changes where two things can happen:

1) When there is a rise in humidity in the microclimate between the skin and the merino fabric, moisture vapor is absorbed then transported and released into the air outside of the fabric, keeping you dry, reducing clamminess, and creating a noticeable drop in temperature for the wearer.

2) Conversely, if the ambient temperature should drop, air is trapped between the fibers and creates an insulating effect. Moisture from your body (sweat) can be absorbed by Merino and converted to a bound liquid then moved to the exterior of the garment to evaporate, a process that produces a rise in temperature known as ‘heat of sorption’.

This evaporation speeds the dry time of the material as well as keeping you cool.
Have you ever noticed that some of your gear dries faster than others? Have you ever weighed your gear and noticed a garment with a thinner fabric weighs more than a similar garment with a thicker fabric? The amount of elastic in the garment’s fabric creates this difference. The higher percentage of Elastic (Spandex or Lycra) the heavier the fabric will weigh and the longer it will take for the fabric to dry. KUIU Ultra Merino is made with Nuyarn featuring 4 way stretch, but contains no Elastic, Lycra or Spandex.

A new feature for the ULTRA MERINO, strategically placed body mapping with eyelet panels in temperature sensitive areas.
Flatlock stitching maximizes the comfort and function of the garment. A flatlock stitch means the two fabrics are butted together and sewn without any overlap. This prevents big, bulky seams with fabric folded underneath. Flatlock stitching helps to streamline the layering system and increase comfort.
The more aerobic the activity is, the wider the eyelets expand which increases the airflow.
